Passion, love, intrigue, guilt, loyalty and death are the elements that make this such an emotional opera. Gounod’s score makes the skirmishes of the powerful Montagues and Capulets contrast sharply with the magnificent duets of the young lovers. Romeo and Juliet is an opera in 5 acts by Charles Gounod with libretto by Jules Barbier and Michel Carre and is based on Shakespeare's play. The opera was first performed in Paris on 27 April 1867. Although it necessarily shortens Shakespeare's text, the libretto follows the plot of the play quite closely. Cast
