Explore the Magic of Opera
Opera incorporates every aspect of the performing arts: singing, acting, dance and movement and visual effects. West London Opera is fortunate to be able to call upon many people who give of their various skills and talents.
To give you an idea of how we put an opera together, we are giving you a brief summary of different aspects. These will be added to over time.
Auditions are held for each show and are “Open Auditions”, which means anyone can apply. The Auditions Secretary is responsible for keeping our soloist records up to date and notifying singers of audition details. The other main task is to provide the panel with the schedule and relevant CVs and to inform the auditionees of the decisions.
The Panel is composed of the conductor, the producer and another professional musician.
The Chorus Master is responsible for training the chorus in the music and rehearsing the principals before the stage movements are worked on.
When it comes to costumes, the first job is to measure everyone. The Costume Designer discusses the general style and colour with the producer. Sometimes the show calls for special dancers who very often provide their own costumes. These need to fit in with the overall design. The fun part is finding suitable fabrics and the making up of costumes.
