About WLOWLO - West London Opera - was founded by Anthony Underwood in 1961, to provide experience of full stage productions of grand opera for young singers hoping to make a career in opera. This is still the mission today.
Within two years of its foundation, the group became established with productions of Rigoletto (Verdi) and The Bartered Bride (Smetana). In 1964 the group staged its first production at Ealing Town Hall - La Traviata (Verdi). Ealing Town Hall became the home of WLO for many years until in 2000, when WLO moved its productions to the Questors Theatre in Ealing. The founder died in 2005 but the opera group continues to flourish and last season enjoyed Bizet's ever-popular "Carmen". This season's production in May 2011 - WLO's 50th Anniversary - will be "Die Fledermaus", a glittering operetta by Johann Strauss.
As well as offering training and experience to young singers hoping to make a career in opera, WLO also offers the opportunity for everybody to join the chorus and participate in the staged productions. There are also opportunities to work backstage or front-of-house.
As a charitable organisation, the objectives of WLO remain unchanged over the years. It offers the public the opportunity to see and hear opera at affordable prices and to experience the wonderful world of Grand Opera.
