About WLO

STOP PRESS - Box Office for La Traviata now open!

camelliaThe love story that enthralled Paris. High Class Courtesan, Fallen Woman, Beautiful Prostitute or Whore with a Heart of Gold – this is Violetta Valery – La Traviata. The opera is about ultimate love, sacrifice and ending in inevitable death – rekindled in today’s Moulin Rouge film.

Be swept away by Violetta’s party that leads to the famous Libiamo ne’lieti calici Drinking Song. Followed by dramatic confrontations in Violetta’s and Alfredo’s summer retreat.

Although Flora’s Party starts light heartedly with gypsies and pretend matadors, it ends with Alfredo’s heinous act.

Finally there is the most heart-rending of tragic endings – a misguided father, a misinformed son all gathering round the dying Violetta.

Visit the Box Office at the Questors Theatre to book your tickets.

WLO - West London Opera - was founded by Anthony Underwood in 1961, to provide experience of full stage productions of grand opera for young singers hoping to make a career in opera. This is still the mission today.

Carmen

Within two years of its foundation, the group became established with productions of Rigoletto (Verdi) and The Bartered Bride (Smetana). In 1964 the group staged its first production at Ealing Town Hall - La Traviata (Verdi). Ealing Town Hall became the home of WLO for many years until in 2000, when WLO moved its productions to the Questors Theatre in Ealing. The founder died in 2005 but the opera group continues to flourish and last season enjoyed a new venture - "The Merry Widow".

This season's production in May 2012 will be "La Traviata".

As well as offering training and experience to young singers hoping to make a career in opera, WLO also offers the opportunity for everybody to join the chorus and participate in the staged productions. There are also opportunities to work backstage or front-of-house.

As a charitable organisation, the objectives of WLO remain unchanged over the years. It offers the public the opportunity to see and hear opera at affordable prices and to experience the wonderful world of Grand Opera. Nabucco
